Yasuko and I had a great time at the Shinnecock Powwow yesterday! It was such a beautiful, blue sky day, perfect temperature and just enough breeze to make things perfect. All around the stage there was a large number of small stores selling beautiful jewelry, arts and crafts and all sorts of delicious food, including our favorite, the Navajo Fry Bread. Awesome drumming and the culture of all the Native American regalia – in other words, an amazing opportunity to take a ton of beautiful pictures!

Yasuko ed io ci siamo divertiti tantissimo ieri allo Shinnecock Pow-wow! Era una giornata assolutamente perfetta, il cielo blu come se l’avessero dipinto, e una temperatura piacevole senza umidita’. Tutto intorno allo stage centrale c’erano decine di piccoli negozietti che vendevano di tutto, da gioielli in argento e pietre preziose, agli oggetti di artigianato alle specialita’ culinarie piu’ svariate, tra cui il nostro preferito, il Navajo Fry Bread! Danze spettacolari, musica interessante e fantastici costumi dai colori sgargianti — in altre parole una occasione unica per scattare un mare di foto bellissime!

There was such an amazing light in the sky and the reflections on the buildings were simply perfect. I love this image, in its entirety, but I particularly like a few details, like the reflection on the left side of the tallest building, the light coming from inside the two columns and, of course, the tones at the top of Hugh Stubbins’ famous Citicorp Center, almost fading in the sky…

C’era una luce molto particolare e i riflessi sui palazzi erano semplicemente perfetti. Adoro questa immagine nel suo complesso, ma in particolare ci sono alcuni dettagli che mi piacciono ancor di piu’, come il riflesso sul lato sinistro del palazzo piu’ alto, la luce che illumina l’interno delle colonne d’acciaio e i toni che quasi svaniscono nel cielo alla cima del famoso grattacielo del Citicorp Center…

The forecast for today was cloudy / rain so I decided to get up early this morning and drive to the city to take some pictures.

I picked Hunters Point, Long Island City, because I had never been there before. Recently, I read that in 2003 they decided to replace Pepsi-Cola’s old bottling plant with several apartment towers and a small river-front park. While the plant was demolished, the distinctive, ruby-red, 120-foot-long, 72-year-old “Pepsi-Cola” sign that sat atop the building has been temporarily dismantled and recently reinstalled nearby, along the boardwalk (click here for more info)

Le previsioni davano nuvoloso e pioggia per la giornata di oggi (Domenica) per cui ho deciso di mettere la sveglia presto e andare in città a scattare qualche foto.

Ho scelto di andare ad Hunters Point, in Long Island City — un quartiere al confine fra Brooklyn e Queen che si affaccia sull’East River all’altezza del palazzo dell’ONU — visto che non ci ero mai stato. Recentemente avevo letto che nel 2003 hanno deciso di abbattere il vecchio stabilimento per l’imbottigliamento della Pepsi Cola e di sostituirlo con alcuni palazzi di appartamenti di lusso e un parco lungo il fiume. Lo stabilimento e’ stato completamente distrutto, ma la grande insegna rossa, lunga 40 metri, che e’ stata un simbolo del quartiere per 72 anni e’ stata smontata temporaneamente e recentemente installata nuovamente sulla passeggiata che costeggia il fiume, proprio davanti all’ONU.
